2025-26 Class 2 - Middle School
In Class 2 (Years 2 and 3), pupils follow a rich and engaging curriculum underpinned by Marwood School’s core values: ambitious progress, respectful consideration, and learning to learn. Subjects are grouped into four key areas of learning to support cross-curricular connections and holistic development:
- The Arts – English, Art, Music, and French
- STEM – Mathematics, Science, Computing, and Design & Technology
- Humanities – Geography, History, and Religious Education
- Physical and Social Development – PE, PSHE, and RSE
The Arts
English
- Reading: Pupils explore a wide range of texts including fiction, poetry and non-fiction. They develop fluency, comprehension and a love of reading through class texts such as Egyptian Cinderella, Blue John and Escape from Pompeii.
- Writing: Children write across genres, producing stories, poems, reports and hybrid texts. They focus on sentence structure, punctuation, spelling and handwriting.
- Spoken Language: Opportunities for drama, discussion, and presentations help build confidence and communication skills.
Art and Design
- Pupils explore drawing, printing and using natural materials to create expressive artwork.
- They learn about artists and techniques, developing their own creative responses.
Music
- Children learn to sing, play instruments and read simple notation through units like Glockenspiel and Three Little Birds.
- Listening and appraising activities help them develop musical preferences and vocabulary.
French (MFL)
- Pupils begin with basic vocabulary and conversational phrases, progressing to topics such as food and café culture.
- Revision and reinforcement activities support retention and confidence.
STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics)
Mathematics
- Year 2: Focus on place value, addition and subtraction, multiplication and division, fractions and shape.
- Year 3: Builds on these foundations with deeper work on statistics, time, money and geometry.
- Pupils use practical resources and visual models to support understanding.
Science
- Topics include nutrition, skeletons, rocks and fossils, light, forces and magnets and plants.
- Pupils develop enquiry skills through hands-on investigations and observations.
Computing
- Children learn about internet safety, coding, branching databases and email.
- They use Purple Mash and micro:bit to develop digital literacy and programming skills.
Design and Technology
- Projects include healthy eating, shell structures, and mechanisms like levers and linkages.
- Pupils design, make, and evaluate their creations using a range of tools and materials.
Humanities
Geography
- Pupils study deserts, countries of the world and food origins.
- They use maps, atlases, and digital tools to explore physical and human geography.
History
- Topics include Ancient Egypt, the Stone Age to Iron Age and the Romans.
- Pupils develop chronological understanding and enquiry skills through artefacts and storytelling.
Religious Education
- Children explore beliefs and practices in Hinduism, Islam and Christianity.
- They reflect on values, festivals, and life journeys through discussion and RE Days.
Physical and Social Development
Physical Education (PE)
- Pupils participate in gymnastics, dance, swimming, athletics and games.
- Lessons promote coordination, teamwork and healthy lifestyles.
PSHE and RSE
- Using the SCARF programme, children learn about relationships, safety, rights and personal growth.
- Topics include valuing differences, keeping safe and growing and changing.
