Classes

At Marwood School we teach a broad and balanced curriculum comprising the core subjects of – Literacy, Mathematics, Science and Computing along with the foundation subjects – History, Geography, Design and Technology, Art, Music, Physical Education, Religious Education and Personal, Social, Health and Citizenship Education. For these subjects there are programmes of study to ensure continuity and progression.

Phonics

This is the method used to teach the skills of reading by decoding text in Classes 1 and 2. It is taught daily in short focussed sessions.  We use Letters and Sounds as our guide to developing children’s knowledge of phonics.  A useful site for parents is http://www.literacytrust.org.uk/resources/practical_resources_info/1032_phonics_glossary

Our school policies are here www.marwood.devon.sch.uk/policies

Detailed schemes of work are available to parents on request. Or these can be found on www.gov.uk/dfe

Children also study French and can take part in a variety of extra-curricular enrichment opportunities.

Learning

Our teaching methods support a wide variety of learning styles and we encourage our children to become independent, confident and reflective learners.

The most important part of school is learning. We plan and organise the teaching to provide children with the skills they need throughout their education.

We believe that children learn by doing things, not just by being told about them. Activity, investigation and experimentation are therefore important parts of the learning process.

All children receive an education appropriate to their needs and abilities. The staff aim to cater for all children within the classroom environment. Some children will benefit from extra support individually or in small groups outside of the classroom. We follow the Special Education Needs (Disability) SEND Code of Practice 2014 and involve families in this process. Where necessary, children have SEN support plans written in consultation with the child, parents, and Special Educational Needs Co-ordinator(SENCO) , Class Teacher and Teaching Assistant. Targets are regularly reviewed and progress shared with parents.
